Power engineering, also called power systems engineering, is a subfield of energy engineering and electrical engineering that deals with the generation, transmission, distribution and utilization of electric power and the electrical devices connected to such systems including generators, motors and transformers.

Power Engineering draws the majority of its theoretical base from electrical engineering and while some power engineers could be considered energy engineers, energy engineers often do not have the theoretical electrical engineering background to understand power engineering.

Power system engineering is the technical discipline applied to designing the electric power system for high power, electric utility applications as well as industrial and commercial power distribution systems.

Job Description for Power Systems Engineer:
Power systems engineers are scientists who work in laboratories or power plants and are responsible for designing, testing, constructing, and operating power systems. They work in laboratories for universities or power companies, as well as in utility plants for utility companies.

Power system engineers work with teams of engineers and scientists and typically report to a lead engineer. They can expect to work during regular business hours, either in the laboratory or at a power plant, and sometimes they will work night shifts or weekends.

They must also be proficient in system diagnostics software and electrical systems monitoring in general.

This job requires at least a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, physics, mathematics, or a related field; many employers require advanced degrees in these fields, as well. Employers of power systems engineers generally require at least one year of relevant experience in engineering or the utility industry, and laboratory jobs require at least one year of laboratory experience. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills are essential, as well as communication skills to analyze, explain, and solve problems with power systems.
